La storica band soul degli Stone Foundation sarà in Italia il 19 e 20 settembre, nel frattempo li abbiamo intervistati
Gli Stone Foundation, formazione soul che ha da poco compiuto i 25 anni di carriera – spesso intrecciata con quella del loro mentore, Paul Weller – annunciano oggi una serie di date che accompagneranno l’uscita del nuovo album The Revival of Survival del 25 marzo scorso. La band toccherà l’Italia in due occasioni: venerdì 19 settembre 2025 all’Arci Bellezza di Milano e sabato 20 settembre al Locomotiv Club di Bologna.

1) 25 anni di carriera e un nuovo album in arrivo. Qual è il vostro segreto, ma soprattutto, quanto siete cambiati o come siete rimasti gli stessi in tutto questo tempo?
Abbiamo un nuovissimo album “The Revival of Survival” che non vediamo l’ora di suonare in Italia con il nostro primo tour da headliner nel vostro paese. La band è sempre stata radicata nel soul ma negli ultimi vent’anni abbiamo esplorato molti stili diversi collegati al soul: dal northern soul alla musica anni ’70, disco, funk, house e degli anni ’80. È stato un viaggio in continua evoluzione.
2) Due singoli hanno anticipato l’uscita dell’album. Come mai li avete scelti e cosa raccontano? E come è andata l’uscita dell’album?
L’album ha raggiunto il terzo posto nelle classifiche indipendenti del Regno Unito, quindi è stato un enorme successo. Volevamo un disco che sollevasse le persone e le facesse ballare. Tutti i singoli dell’album sono pensati per sollevare l’anima (soul) delle persone.
3) Siete definiti una band che si è distinta per il suo spirito collaborativo e il suo approccio inclusivo. Cosa potete dire in vostra difesa? E, scherzi a parte, perché è così importante per voi?
Collaboriamo sempre con altre persone e abbiamo avuto la fortuna di esibirci e collaborare con musicisti leggendari nel corso degli anni, come Melba Moore, William Bell, Graham Parker, Hamish Stuart degli Average White Band e Paul Weller, solo per citarne alcuni. Ci siamo ispirati a gruppi come gli Steely Dan e al modo in cui utilizzavano musicisti e voci diversi per canzoni diverse. Questo è sempre stato il nostro approccio: quando è necessario un certo stile, ci rivolgiamo sempre a cantanti e musicisti per aiutarci a creare il suono che avevamo originariamente in testa.
4) Il vostro legame con Paul Weller è molto stretto, come è nato?
Gli furono dati un paio di dischi che avevamo pubblicato nel 2015/16 e lui mi ha chiamato dicendo che gli piaceva la mia voce e le canzoni che stavamo scrivendo chiedendomi se fossimo interessati a scrivere qualcosa insieme. Ovviamente cogliemmo al volo l’occasione di lavorare con lui e da lì nacque la nostra amicizia.
5) Nel Regno Unito siete stati definiti un gruppo di “maestoso e ottimista soul”. Vi identificate in questa definizione? Da dove vengono le vostre radici soul?
Sì, sicuramente cerchiamo di dare speranza e ottimismo alla gente attraverso i nostri testi e la nostra musica. Credo che la gente ne abbia bisogno ora più che mai. L’obiettivo mio e della band a ogni concerto degli Stone Foundation è quello di far sì che la gente lasci il locale sorridente, felice e sollevata.
6) Dei vostri undici album, quale vi ha segnato di più, nel bene e nel male?
“Street Rituals”, prodotto da Paul Weller, è stato davvero speciale, ma a dire il vero gli ultimi 5 dischi sono stati registrati nei suoi Black Barn Studios e siamo rimasti davvero soddisfatti di tutti. Dal punto di vista sonoro sono tutti molto diversi, ma il percorso che abbiamo intrapreso per realizzarli è stato fantastico.
7) In Italia avete in programma due date, perché avete scelto Bologna come seconda tappa, nonostante non sia una grande città?
Abbiamo sentito dire che a Bologna c’è una scena musicale davvero importante, abbiamo parlato con i nostri amici del negozio Disco D’oro e abbiamo scoperto la meravigliosa cultura musicale che c’è lì. Non vediamo l’ora di andarci per la prima volta, qualcosa mi dice che sarà davvero speciale.
8) Viaggiando per il mondo, qual è il posto che vi è rimasto nel cuore durante i tanti tour?
Adoriamo suonare in Spagna, Giappone, Germania ecc., ma un anno fa abbiamo aperto il concerto di Paul Weller a Milano, è stato davvero speciale e abbiamo potuto constatare in prima persona quanto fosse grande il pubblico italiano. Mi è stato persino chiesto di salire sul palco con Paul per “Broken Stones”, un momento davvero speciale. Siamo emozionatissimi per le date da headliner di quest’anno in Italia. È uno dei miei paesi preferiti, con una delle nostre culture preferite.
1) 25 years of career and a new album. What is your secret, but above all, how have you changed and how have you remained the same?
Yes we have a brand new album “The Revival of survival” which we can’t wait to play in Italy and on our first headlining tour there as well. The band has always been rooted in soul music but over the last two decades we’ve explored the many different styles within that huge genre, from northern soul, to 70’s, disco, funk, house and 80’s. It’s been an ever evolving journey.
2) Two singles anticipated the release of “The Revival of Survival”. Why did you choose these and what do they say? How did the release of the album go?
The album reached number 3 in the Uk independent charts so it’s been a huge success. We wanted a record that would uplift people and make them dance. All the singles from the record are designed to uplift people souls.
3) You are defined as a band that has stood out for its collaborative spirit and inclusive approach. What can you say in your defense? And, jokes aside, why is it so important to you?
We always collaborate with people and have been lucky to perform and collaborate with some legendary musicians over the years from Melba Moore, William bell, graham Parker, hamish stuart from The average white band and Paul Weller to name a few. We were inspired by bands like steely Dan and the way they would use different musicians and voices for different songs. This has always been our approach if a certain flavour is called for we always reach out to singers & musicians to help create the sound we originally heard in our heads.
4) Your bond with Paul Weller is very close, how did it come about?
He was given a couple of records we’d released in 2015/16 he reached out to me saying he loved my voice and the songs we were writing and would we be interested in writing something together. We obviously jumped at the chance to work with him and our friendship flourished from there.
5) In the UK you have been defined as a “majestic and optimistic soul” group, do you identify with this definition? And where do your soul roots come from?
Yes definitely we try to give people hope and optimism in our lyrics and music I think people need that now more than ever. The objective from myself and the band at any Stone Foundation gig is to make sure people leave the venue smiling, happy & uplifted.
6) Of your eleven albums, which one has marked you the most, for better or for worse?
Street rituals which was produced by paul weller was very special but to be honest the last 5 records have been recorded at his black barn studios and we really pleased with them all. Sonically they’re all very different but the journey we’ve been on making them has been fantastic.
7) In Italy you have two dates scheduled, why did you choose Bologna as the second stop, even though it is not a big city?
We heard there was a really big music scene in Bologna, we’ve been speaking to our friends at Disco D’oro record shop in Bologna and learning about the wonderful music loving culture you have there. We can’t wait to come there for the first time something’s tells me it’s going to be very special.
8) Traveling around the world, what is the place that you carry in your heart during the many tours?
We love playing in spain, Japan, Germany etc but a year ago we supported paul weller in Milan, that was very special indeed and we saw first hand just how great the Italian crowds were. I was even asked to join Paul onstage for broken stones which was a very special moment. We’re so exited about this years headlining dates in Italy. It’s one of my favourite countries with one of our favourite cultures.
